Ryman and the Environment

The people who work for Ryman have a strong consideration for the environment.

Ryman has recently started working with The Carbon Trust [www.carbontrust.co.uk] to help it assess and reduce its carbon footprint. This work is at an early stage, with various carbon reduction strategies for the business being explored.

Ryman is fully committed to reducing carbon emissions wherever possible and realises that this commitment is also important to its customers.

Ryman has biodegradable carrier bags which - due to their light weigh - have a smaller carbon footprint than an equivalent sized paper bag. These bags will also degrade in landfills when buried in soil, when inadvertently disposed of as litter, or in compost facilities, therefore saving valuable land fill space.

The Company also sells reusable carrier bags made from non-woven polypropylene is also available from Ryman stores. All Ryman Stores have recycling points for used cartridges and customers are encouraged to recycle their printer cartridges. Customers who do this receive 50p (per cartridge) off their next purchase of ink cartridges.

Under the Waste Battery Regulations, Ryman are now offering a take back scheme for all portable waste batteries. Recycling boxes can be found in all our stores, alternatively, you can find your local waste portable battery recycling facility at www.recyclenow.co.uk. Most supermarkets and shops that sell batteries will have collection bins for used batteries, and some town halls, libraries or schools may also set up collection points. End-users may find stores in their local area more accessible.

Both cardboard and plastic waste from the Company’s warehouse packaging and logistics operations are compressed and recycled.

The Ryman delivery fleet uses latest Euro4 vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and the Company continues to monitor developments in eco-friendly fuels. Routes are also analysed to lower fuel consumption where possible.

Ryman is working with suppliers to develop low carbon products using new technology, including paper products from recycled paper or sustainable forests.

Ryman requires that all suppliers comply with the code of ethical trading (The Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code) and continues to monitor these standards on a regular basis.
