Laser printers are very popular, and for good reason. Unsurprisingly, they use a laser to help print your documents, and they do so very quickly. Everything you need to know about laser printers is right here. Let’s get stuck in!

How Does a Laser Printer Work?

Laser printers do use a laser to print your documents. That’s not all though, it’s actually a more interesting process than you might think.

Laser printers mostly use static electricity to get text onto paper. Instead of ink, laser printers use toner which is more powder-like. The laser within the printer beams against a mirror which reflects onto a photoreceptor drum, contained within the printer. This is how your document is drawn onto paper. Toner is then released onto the area the laser has passed over. Electrical charges are then used on the toner and paper to get the toner to sit on the paper. After that, the paper passes through hot rollers that fuse the toner to the paper. Now you have a beautifully printed document.

This is a process that can be done quickly, which is why laser printers are really efficient and popular in offices.

Laser Printer vs Inkjet Printer: What’s the Difference?

Although you may not know it at first glance, laser printers and inkjet printers aren’t the same. What is the difference between inkjet and laser printers though? There are a few key factors.

The main difference between laser printers and inkjet printers is the way that they print. As we mentioned earlier, laser printers bond toner to paper using static electricity and heat. Inkjet printers however, use liquid ink. This liquid ink is applied to paper using dozens of micronozzles.

Inkjet printers are popular all-round printers that many households have in their home offices. They usually have a lower upfront cost than a laser printer, however they have a higher running cost. Inkjet printers are also popular with designers and photographers as they offer high quality colour printing.

Laser printers on the other hand, are more commonly found in traditional offices due to their high printing volume capabilities. Laser printers have a higher upfront cost, but lower cost per page. They can print black and white text documents at speed and make them look extremely crisp.

The Benefits of Laser Printers

Laser printers have many benefits that make them an ideal piece of office equipment.

As we have mentioned before, laser printers are capable of printing high volumes of documents at a fast pace. If you require a lot of text documents to be printed during your work day, you need to invest in a laser printer. They also have a low printing cost in comparison to inkjet printers. Toner tends to last longer than liquid ink, meaning you won’t have to frequently replace it. Traditional offices tend to use laser printers because of their efficiency and low printing costs. If many people are going to be using the printer, it needs to be economical.

Although laser printers are capable of printing photos, they aren’t going to be as high quality as inkjet printers. Some laser printers can print in colour and have the ability to print images, which will work fine if you only need basic image printing.
