What are LED lights?

LED lights are a type of light which uses very little energy in comparison to other lights. They are very efficient and are bright as soon as they are turned on, unlike other lights which can need time to reach full brightness.

How long do LED lights last?

A typical LED bulb will have a rated lifespan of up to 50,000 hours which, if used for 12 hours a day, will last more than 11 years! This is roughly 20 times longer than a halogen bulb, and roughly 10 times longer than a regular energy saving bulb. Some ultra long-lasting LED bulbs can last for as long as 25-30 years depending on frequency of use.

How do LED lights work?

LED lights work by transmitting an electrical current through a semiconductor which then emits light energy. LED stands for light-emitting diode - the diode being the semiconductor which lights up when electricity flows through it. Diodes are typically made from silicon or selenium.

In this way, LEDs are different from traditional bulbs and regular energy-saving bulbs. Traditional incandescent bulbs rely on a thin wire filament to transmit the electrical current, and regular energy-saving bulbs use mercury vapour to produce UV light.

How to dim LED lights?

LED lights can be dimmed just like any other light bulb, provided you are using them with a compatible lamp. If you use LED bulbs with a regular dimmer switch you may run into problems such as flickering or buzzing, which can be caused by old dimmer switches that were designed for higher wattages typically found on incandescent light bulbs. It’s best to use LED lights only with dimmable products designed specifically for use with LED bulbs, or to upgrade your dimmer switch to be suitable for LEDs.
